Camellias
This week I have gathered together a selection of still life paintings of camellias. The white ones, called Fried Egg flowers or Gordonias are not strictly camellias, but a very closely related species, so that’s why I have gathered both together under one label. The flowers of the gordonia and the camellia look very similar. However the main difference between the trees is that the camellia flowers age and go brown on the tree, whereas aged gordonia flowers fall off and land facing upward, making a carpet of fried eggs under the tree. Camellias and gordonias both flower in early winter. At that time of year there is a general dearth of good flowers to paint, so that makes them a natural still life subject. I have a gordonia plant growing in a pot in my garden, as you might guess from the number of Fried Egg paintings in this selections. It’s very convenient, I just bring the whole plant into the studio when I want to set up a still life painting.
Exhibition
My next art exhibition will be held at the Brisbane Institute of Art from 11th to the 23rd November 2022. Send me a note and I’ll remind you before my art show starts. Christine.
