Lemons in Still Life

Latest NewsBy Christine Atkins28 February 2025

I use lemons in still life paintings to contrast with the many blue objects that I paint. Blue is my favourite colour and lemons make an obvious counterpoint.

Eight O'clock flowers are in an old glass oil jug with the plate behind them.

My paintings often feature local Queensland flowers set into an Asian themed background.

A glass vase of wattle blooms is set against a dark blue background. The vase itself rests on a cream doily.

Wattle Blooms

There are about 1000 different types of wattle native to Australia. I suspect most would make for great painting subjects.

Objects are standing on a shelf. A tablecloth which the objects are standing on hangs down in front of the shelf.

The Teapot

I have used the same china teapot in many of my still life paintings over the years. It has been with me on my journey of discovery in this medium.

Peach Blossoms

Peach flowers outside my studio herald the coming of spring each year and each year they beckon me to paint them.

The Lily

Latest NewsBy Christine Atkins28 May 2024

The Lily makes a great subject for still life painting. Their colourful forms give rise to endless variety. Many of the lilies shown here were grown in my own garden.

Eucalypt Flowers

Beautiful eucalypt flowers bring with them the pungent smell of crushed gum leaves and that often awakens memories from earlier years.

Bengal Clock Vine grows on a fence in my suburb. Even in a glass vase, the large pods will open into flowers, so painting these flowers is a journey of discovery. You are never quite sure how the final composition will look until it's finished.

Purple and Blue

Latest NewsBy Christine Atkins1 February 2024

Blue and purple flowers are featured in this still life post. I grow many of these flowers for my paintings or garner them from neighbouring streets.

Mandarins

Latest NewsBy Christine Atkins3 January 2024

Mandarins are often featured in modern still life paintings because of their beautiful colour. I have gathered together in this post some of my paintings of this fruit.

A bunch of nasturtium flowers sit in a glass vase on a shelf. A cream doily under the happy flowers shows up nicely against the dark blue background.
