Yellow and Blue
I enjoy using bright colours in my paintings and their brightness really shines out when the light colours have a dark background. Technically this effect is called chiaroscuro and the contrasting colour is often black. However I don’t like black and my choice of dark colour is Ultramarine. This is very deep blue and it is the background colour of many of my still life paintings. The light colours like yellow stand out strongly against this deep blue. I have a lemon tree in my garden and it’s no surprise that yellow lemons on a blue cloth is a frequent subject in my still life paintings. The brightness of the yellow lemons really sings against the blue of the many different cloths that I use in my paintings.
