Tibouchinas
The royal purple of the tibouchina bush beautifies many of the streets and suburbs of Brisbane. Here the tibouchina blooms most of the year, including the depths of our mild winters. In other parts of Australia this plant normally only flowers in late summer and autumn. There are several varieties and not all of them are the usual deep, luscious purple. Some bushes yield pink flowers, even white flowers. The flower shape varies as well. Recently I came across a bush with a distinctly tulip-shaped flower. As a bonus this plant also produces something like gum nuts after the petals drop off. It is growing at the entrance of a unit block. I will discreetly borrow a few flowers (and the associated gum nuts) to paint when it comes into bloom again!
