Blue and White China
Blue and white china has been produced in many cultures around the world. The famous combination comes about because cobalt blue pigment is the only colour that will withstand the high temperature needed to produce the beautiful white of the porcelain. So like ham & eggs, or horse and carriage, the combination of blue and white porcelain was a partnership for the ages. The best cobalt blue pigment came from the Middle East and the best kaolin clay for the porcelain came from China, so the combination has always been international.
High-value blue and white ceramics used as a vase for flowers naturally makes a subject for still life painting and that has been the case in many cultures throughout the world. The paintings that I have selected today are ones where the china is the main subject as opposed to just being the backdrop for flamboyant flowers.
