Lemons
I often use lemons in my paintings. Their crisp yellow is a counterpoint to the many variations of blue that I like to use. Frescoes of lemons and lemon trees adorn some of the walls of villas in the Roman city of Pompeii. However lemons came into their own in the seventeenth century. The Dutch masters of still life used lemons in their paintings because they were a rare fruit, probably imported from Spain or Italy. In Dutch art, lemons in a still life could represent Luxury, Love or Longevity! I doubt that the lemons in my paintings have any deep symbolic meanings and they are no longer rare – they just last well under the spotlight!
