Cosmos and Mak’Merry Motif
Prunus Flowers
I saw a ceramic design of white prunus flowers in an Edinburgh (UK) museum that I really liked. It was hand – painted Mak’Merry pottery with its bold, uncomplicated outlines and clean, bright colours. Prunus flowers are used as a pottery decoration throughout the world, but I particularly like the Scottish take on this design. I sketched the motif and took the photos which are shown here. On coming home I hand painted the design on ceramics which I have since used for several still life paintings. This small, Scots women’s pottery group was only active for a few decades in the early 20th century, but the work it produced was exceptional and deserves to be remembered.
