On the Shelf

Embroidery and Daisies.
In still life painting there is a great tradition of having items on a shelf with a cloth showing the edge of the shelf or table. I am quite interested in lace, many antique shops have collections of beautiful lace doilies or cutwork embroidery. These pieces of undervalued women’s work took considerable time and skill to make, but now have outlived their purpose in life – the world has moved on, leaving them stranded in antique shops and bric-a-brac markets. However they are still beautiful objects, even if they are unwanted in our fast-paced world. In these paintings I celebrate them and salute the fine needlework skills of the women who made them!
