How Hatstand Mt Barney was painted

An art group I was associated with was staying at Mt Barney Lodge when I saw this hatstand. I did a quick sketch in pastel at the time, but started this painting in the studio. The charcoal drawing on the canvas was carefully squared up before starting and every line was carefully checked with a set square. An easy way to create a mess is to use a set square to correct something wonky in a half-finished pastel – don’t ask me how I know that!
