How Bottlebrush and White Lace was painted
With still life paintings, my practice is to paint in the main flowers and leaves immediately on the base coat. This establishes the main features of the composition. However this means that any work on the background has to be painted in the negative space between the complicated pattern of leaves and flowers. When a still life subject has small leaves and flowers, this can prove a challenge. In this painting the background is uncomplicated so it isn’t a problem.
