How 'Blue and White with Yellow' was Crafted
 |
The hardboard
is prepared with sprayed Aluminium Oxide and painted with
blue gouache. The position of the shelves and cloths is arranged
on a table before me, illuminated with a strong light. The
fundamentals are blocked in in grey hard pastel.

I work from top
to bottom, as the prussian blue tends to stain everything
else if I put it on last.

Once the prussian
blue background is on I can work all over the painting, working
the china with a variety of greys, saving white for the glinting
highlights.

I added the flowers to the china
arrangment last of all, that way they didn't wilt while the
rest of the painting was being crafted. The white highlights
make the painting come alive.
